Post Situational Awareness

I posted a rant in the things that annoy me a little bit thread about people being glued to their phones at inappropriate times. It got me thinking about how so many people just don't have any situational awareness.

I'm not proposing that everyone becomes Jason Bourne, that would be a strange world. I'm not one of these people who moans about people being glued to their phones all the time. Okay, I am one of those people. But my point is that its fine if you want to use them, but at least maintain some awareness of your surroundings. I've seen a person walk straight into a road without looking, as they were starring at her phone, this was as the lights changed so the cars started moving towards them. The other day I saw a person literally blocking the whole entrance to a shop whilst she composed a message.

The former could easily have been injured or killed. When I saw the latter I mused about how easy it would have been to pinch something out of their bag and they would literally have been clueless until I was long gone.

Wherever I go I make a conscious effort to be mindful of my surroundings. I don't have my head on a swivel like a KGB spy, but I like to make a mental note of who is where, and who might be a potential threat. Generally there aren't threatening people everywhere, but one thing I do notice is that 8 times out of 10 I've noticed the other person a long time before they notice me. If I was a threatening sort of person, I might use that to my advantage.

I don't know where I'm going with this. I just feel like venting it. Whenever I see a person obliviously walking down the street looking at their phone I want to slap it out of their hand and tell them to have some situational awareness, either that or I secretly hope they walk into a lamp post.

Do you like to keep track of your surroundings? Or do you not care? Are you one of those people who walks along texting?

What makes me angry is people on their phones when driving. Fuckers!!!

It's ok if some idiot doesn't pay attention and walks into a ditch. But drivers using their phones while driving is a danger to other people. I drove behind such people a few times and they're driving as though they were drunk.
Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

I've seen someone sitting at traffic lights texting, the lights changed to green, they still sat there, then they went back to red again....

I've also seen people just stop in the middle of the road, not even a slight attempt to pull over, just to text.

It should definitely be treated similarly to drink driving. No text or phone call is worth killing yourself/someone else.

Post Re: Situational Awareness

Greetings,

Just on the mobile phone aspect...

Given that hands-free kits are the law in vehicles, perhaps they should prevent calls/texts coming through whilst the vehicle is in motion!? In other words, they're delayed until the vehicle has stopped - GPS could detect whether this is at lights or the side of the road - when the phone would beep to indicate a missed call/text.

Equally, calling/texting someone whilst the vehicle is in motion would be prevented until the driver pulled over to the side of the road.

Just a thought! ;)

I'd appreciate royalties from whoever patents this idea.

Kindest regards,

James

Today I observed someone crossing a road with their 2 small children, fixated on their phone.

Awesome parenting
