Post First Exomoon found?

BBC wrote:A team of astronomers has potentially discovered the first known moon beyond the Solar System.

If confirmed, the "exomoon" is likely to be about the size and mass of Neptune, and circles a planet the size of Jupiter but with 10 times the mass.

Wouldn't that be grand? To find a moon from a different system than ours?

Too bad the journalists are being too hopeful again, the actual paper is a bit more cautious:

Actual scientists wrote:Finally, we have briefly highlighted our identification of an exomoon candidate in the Kepler-1625 system, for which we have secured a follow-up observation with HST. This candidate has passed a thorough preliminary inspection, but we emphasize again our position that the Kepler data are insufficient to make a conclusive statement about the existence of this moon. Only after the HST observation is made should any claim about this moon’s existence be given much credence.

Then again I do think that the first confirmed exomoon is just a matter of time. And then astronomers can start a fight about what qualifies as a moon and what is a double planet system circling a star. I mean just look at the suggested size of that thing!

Post Re: First Exomoon found?

Greetings,

Yes, I saw this yesterday but didn't post it.

What would really blow everyone away is if the exo-moon - confirmed - itself had moons!

Kindest regards,

James
