Hey if Jack is driving through Salt Lake, we might be able to meet up there first and get everything split up into 2 cars.

Post Re: Yellowstone - 12-15th of August .

That sounds like a plan, i am planning to be near the Salt Lake City Amtrak station around 3-4am on the 12th..

there is an all night ihop down the street from the station, and thats where ill be :3

As for the amount of equipment,

i say we need at least 2 stoves and a couple lanterns and propane. Mainly what we will need is food and drinks.

Everyone should have a tent and sleeping bag and a set of mess gear.

Post Re: Yellowstone - 12-15th of August .

Update:

So those attending are:
GeologyJack
Aeritano
Kenandkids+1
Dustinite+1
FSA

I would like for Kenandkids and Dustinite to confirm if their +1 is coming along.

Maybes: Cephi and Depz

Gear list and suggestion:

Shelter:

There is usually a limit to how many tents so if you have a large cabin tent we could really use that, 8 people with individual tents wont fly. However I am expecting the weather to be nice; clear skies, light winds from the south west and 45-50 degrees at night with a dew point around 35. Such fantastic weather gives us the opportunity to sleep out. Sleeping out is just wonderful and I encourage you to try it should the opportunity arise. For those interested in sleeping out, I do however suggest a bug net.

Dining Individually:
Everyone needs to bring their own dishes, utensils and reusable water bottle. Bring a mug, you don't have to get a fancy metal mug unless you want to heat your water in it, for the most part a ceramic coffee mug will do. You can get away with bring the dishes from home, that's fine. Mess kits are nice though since they are metal and you can cook on them. If you are a coffee drinker and you plan on bringing a french press tell us so the other coffee drinkers don't all bring one as well.

Dining Group:

We could benefit greatly if someone had one of those coleman two burner stoves. I think that would be sufficient for 8 people. If anyone has one and can bring it let us know. Tell us what fuel so the others in the party can split the cost on the fuel. If no one has one then I might be able to muster something up. So long as there is no fire ban in the park we could easily get away sans stove.

I am bring a small kettle with me for boiling water but if someone has a larger one that could bring then that would be helpful.

The rest of the cookware we will need will be determined by what we plan on bringing for our epics feasts.

Clothing:
I expect the weather to be dry, with little chance of rain. It has been a year of interested weather patters. I suggest bring warm clothes with a waterproof outer layer. Stay away from cotton if you can. When cotton get's wet, it becomes a determent and will keep you cold.

Boots:
Bring the footwear that is going to be adequate for the hiking you plan on doing. I will probably drag my fat ass up some hill, that has some shitty terrain. If any of you guys are coming along for that, then bring your good boots.

FIRE!
Everyone who is driving bring firewood.

Communications:

If you have an FRS radio I would recommend bringing it, I have a set I am going to bring along, but that is only two. Some of us might want to hike, other might want to chill, etc... so if we break off into multiple groups the radios will help us stay in contact.

Please for the love of Carlin. Once we all arrive at the site. Let's power down the phones.

First Aid:

Bring a personal first aid kit.

Lighting:
Personally I don't like lanterns. However it will be useful if there is a fire restriction in the park. I tend to be a camp fire only guy. I do however recommend that everyone bring their own personal flashlight, even better if you have a head lamp.

Food:
Alright. That's it for the gear listing. Now onto the most important part food.

I can typically survive on trail mix, oatmeal and protein shakes while in the field. Since we are car camping, why the fuck do that to yourself?

What I suggest everyone brings their own food for breakfast and lunch. I plan on spending all day away from the campsite, so most of my food is going to be packable.Dinner however is going to be different. We have two fantastic evenings to eat tasty food, get drunk and have a good time. Here is where we pitch in for booze, meet and anything we want to feast on.

What I suggest we do is we break into two groups, and the two groups come up with a menu for one of the nights and we'll cook of the other group and vice versa.

So I am thinking Aeritano, GeoJack and Myself will be in one group, we can take the first night.

Dusti +1 and Kenandkids+1 can be the other group and take the second night.

If Cephi and Depz can make it then will figure it out from there.

Before we go on to coordinating our epic meal time, we need to know who is allergic to what and what dietary restrictions anyone in the group might have.

Post Re: Yellowstone - 12-15th of August .

I have no issues sharing a tent... dont know how anyone else about sharing a tent with a gay guy :P

dont worry guys.. i have my own mummy bag..

as for food allergies.. lab work has caused me to develop an allergy towards raw egg (if its baked into something it is fine)... which shouldn't make much of a difference, since breakfast is on our own. Im probably going to pack snacks, since i dont want to carry food boxes on amtrak

again, ill be in Salt Lake city near the amtrak station around 3-4am on the 12th... and since GeoJack is picking me up sometime that morning and we are in the first dining group, we can probably hit a walmart or something during the day to pick up the food for the first night dinner

Provided you leave the disco ball at home... rofl.

My hitch-hiking tent is missing, so I'd planned on camping out, it's generally a lot better experience anyway. I won't know about the +1 until the first week of August. No allergies of importance.

Post Re: Yellowstone - 12-15th of August .

I can get my hands on a coleman outdoor stove (double burner) and I have an old coffee pot you can throw right in the campfire, but it only does about 5-6 cups.

My +1 probably can't come because she'll be going back to classes that week, but I'll know more in a couple weeks. I was planing to just camp out and keep a spare tent in my trunk.

For food on the second night I was going to grill some steaks (or carne asada) with campfire potates, corn on the cob, and possibly some peach cobbler (the way pappy taught me to make it :D). I could make haggis but I doubt anyone would eat it but me.

I can possibly get six 2-way analog radios with 15 channels from work, but it depends if the job site needs them that week so I wouldn't count on it.

I plan to be going through SLC at 6AM a couple hours behind aeritano. I don't think I can make it there by 4AM unless I was speeding and I was able to get out of work on the 11th early enough. We don't necessarily have to meet up in SLC I just want to make sure if we're running out of space or want to consolidate vehicles that seems to be the main hub.

Let me know what you think...

Post Re: Yellowstone - 12-15th of August .

bring the stove and the coffee pot.

we can always make mre coffee if we run out :P

you're food sounds good. here is what FSA, Geojack and I decided on for the first night:
chicken fajitas
au gratin potatoes
corn on the cob
corebread/bread
and probably some pastry of some kind

As for meeting in SLC, i think Geojack, dustnite and me should meet up. Since geojack is my ride, i dont expect him there before 6am :P
im gonna chill at the ihop down the street

and besides, SLC is the last main city we can ctop to get any last minute supplies.. so i think we should all meet up at the Ihop next to the amtrak station around 6am to a light breakfast and to look at what we have and what we need to pick up from the store

Ya, that sounds like a plan. You never know what will go wrong and it usually will..

I'll actually be coming in from the north, I-90, then south into Yellowstone. Dustnite, wanna send me a list of supplies that you want me to provide? If my roommate comes, then firewood and fresh food is easy, if not then I'll be hiking in and can bring dry (light) stuff like coffee and dehydrated foods.

I have decided to camp out, so i wont need a net.. but i will still need a bottom matt if you can spare on geojack :P

Dustnite can get ahold of a 12 man tent, as a backup in case anything happens

Kenandkids: If you can, can you bring coffee? much appreciated :P

we still need to make sure we can get enough wood

Definitely can!

Last I was there, they had scavenging restrictions on wood, but not a ban. Anyone have more recent info?

It's looking like I can't go. My son was due to be born at the end of August (due date was my birthday lol) but there have been some complications and it looks likely that he'll be making his appearance in the next two weeks. I don't know exactly, I'm waiting on some results and seeing how things go...
