Post North Carolina Outlawing Sea Level Rise Predictions

"What do you do when your worldview is threatened? If you're a North Carolina lawmaker, you do the one thing you know best: make the offending evidence illegal."
,Fellow Geek

"Some North Carolina GOP legislators want to stop the use of science to plan for the future. They are circulating a bill that would force coastal counties to ignore actual observations and the best science-based projections in planning for future sea level rise. ["¦] One North Carolinian writing in Scientific American said the proposed bill is 'exactly like saying, do not predict tomorrow's weather based on radar images of a hurricane swirling offshore, moving west towards us with 60-mph winds and ten inches of rain. Predict the weather based on the last two weeks of fair weather with gentle breezes towards the east. Don't use radar and barometers; use the Farmer's Almanac and what grandpa remembers.'"
    ,The Energy Collective

Quite amazing, in more ways than one, I should think; and thus it would be helpful to gather some opinions on this (though I doubt there will be significant disagreement).

I don't think it is anything more or less than a sell-out to coastal developers who want to build on unstable property without having to reinforce the foundations or pay higher insurance rates, or disclose to investors that the properties could be undermined by rising sea levels much sooner than their fixed projections assert.

No, they like science just fine as long as it doesn't affect profits.

Well, science has basicly made their profits. So their point is invalid.

Thankfully for us, North-Carolina lawmakers can only gratify this particular brand of retrogressive science-denialism for so long, it seems. As their neighbouring U. S. states begin taking measures to account for the anticipated near-future sea-level rise, North Carolina will , in all probability , buckle to "pier" pressure (in a manner of speaking), and wake up to smell the sea air in not too long from now. Indeed, only last week,New Jersey opened a new $400-million bridge; the Route-52 Somers Point Cause-way, that was purpose-built with (very) high piers to accommodate for the predicted sea-level rise over the course of the 21st century . . .

Yea there is some sense left in the States, and this time pier pressure works for the better of people.

I'm not really surprised. Remember, Climate Change is just about as controversial here in America as Evolution

Embrace the apocalypse my friends...and if you don't want to, fuck you. We outlaw resistance now. Only a matter of time before speaking about the science of climate change is considered terrorism too. So whatch yourselves, else you invoke a predator drone to pay you a visit...

Fail hyperbole is fail, I've seen enough of that browsing Youtube and neocon website comment sections. At best, inane, at worst, a stupid contribution better off being kept to a chat room. Anything you want to share that's actually relevant? Maybe a joke that's actually funny.

This is about a group of idiot politicians trying to pass a bill that restricts the authority of government bodies under their state's jurisdiction, not outlawing the actual act of expressing a want for climate change preparations. Any variety of stupid bills can be submitted to legislators, it doesn't mean they're getting passed, which is often a lengthy and difficult process to make happen even for insignificant bills.

Oh, there it is. I see what you did. Though the quotations helped. :P

Anyway you could find hope in that NJ example you went on to mention. However, the rebuilt levees in Louisiana may have a lesson as well; do not underestimate the persistence of greed -- even in the face of impending and recently transpired disaster. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news ... evees.html

So there's that.

Not really ignoring what you are saying out of hand, but I just can't bring myself to care about your critique.

Translation: "I'm going to ignore what you said because I don't want to defend my stupid garbage that I posted thinking I was clever."

Nice additional input you added too, implying you had something other than unoriginal, unfunny pseudo-points to add. You sure you're on the right forum? Never mind, you don't have enough integrity to reply anyway so why should I bother.

If you think it's garbage it's fine by me actually. Can't make everyone happy and that certainly isn't my goal so why waste the effort trying to appease you...also lol @ the implication that I am trying to appease you. Get over yourself.

I thought you weren't going to reply to my critique? I must be hitting a nail somewhere to make you double back from the "Too mature to reply" down to "Oh yeah? -insert smiley-", how cute. Dean and others are STILL waiting for you to say something actually important, I bet.

Okay this seems obvious that there's some chip on your shoulder. Taking it to PM.

Not interested, here or not at all.
In case you lost sight of the point: I called you out for making a poorly articulated post that intentionally or not, completely missed the point of the thread, which you followed with a silly pseudo-ignore(Saying you wont reply is itself a reply, nice trolling there). Unless you'd like to point out exactly how it was relevant, I don't see why you're even defending your use of Dean's thread as a joke platform. And if you think there's anything personal here you're the only one.

Times I used the word 'Point:' 3

Edited for extra rudeness

Girls, girls, you're both pretty, now shut up.
Why does my life have to be so small
And death is forever
And does forever have a life to call its own?
Don't give me an answer cause you only know
As much as I know
Unless you've been there once
And I hardly think so

I can almost picture a cartoon here...

Something involving people from North Carolina up to their ankles in sea water....

Needs a gag though...
