Post Sherlock Holmes..... crap?

Ok, so I was watching the trailer for the new Sherlock Holmes film, with Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law, and I wondered something...

Am I the only one who thinks its going to suck?

The trailer makes it look like an action flick, rather than the laid-back detective story it should be. My understanding is that it is supposed to be a younger version of watson and holmes, but it really just looks like an excuse for a poor story and lots of bare-knuckle boxing.

Thoughts?

I'm willing to give it a chance due to the fact that it's directed by Guy Ritchie and I like his work

I've been a big Holmes fan since childhood, and when Holmes and Watson first meet their not that old, probably round about the same age as Jude Law and R Downey Jr are right now.

So picking two people of their agegroup doesn't reduce the age of the characters at all.

Next, no you're not alone, and although I could accept Holmes and Watson as action heros (Watson is an ex soldier, and Holmes is a pugilist amongst other things), but what I really can't take is the silliness.

Holmes is not silly, he is pathologically incapable of slapstick, and he is aloof and highly cultured, not whacky and dressed like a cross between Harpo Marx, and professor Emmet Brown.

The Holmes in this film isn't Holmes, and the Watson isn't Watson, and none of it is even remotely like Conan Doyle's writing, but the name Holmes sells so it's been crudely tacked onto a steam-punk b-movie, IMO.

I went into the cinema expecting Robert Downey Jr. not Sherlock Holmes. And I walked out two hours later with a smile on my face. It wasn't the best of movies, but definitly worth watching if you like Robert Downey Jr.

I wouldn't exactly call the books great literature, but Jeremy Brett has pretty much spoiled me on Holmes. I'm not sure what to think from the trailer. I can't quite imagine how they could make Holmes an action star and an opium addict.

It's cocaine and he never quite becomes addicted, in fact he eventually swaps cocaine for bee-keeping.. Sorry for the bluntness, I be tired.

Aww :(

In the Jeremy Brett series it was an opium den, wasn't it? But I can see how the cocaine fits in.

Nope fraid not. Holmes' habit was always coke. One of the stories includes a well to do opium addict who's deliberately infected with a rare tropical disease though. It was turned into one of the J Brett adaptations, I watched a rerun just before Christmas, but can't remember title.

Having seen every episode in the series at least 2X, I know exactly which one you are talking about. Not sure on the name, though.

That's fascinating. Did the Victorians have cocaine dens? I've never heard of it.

I don't remember hearing of coke dens either.

Holmes used to inject coke in a specific diluted solution,....Conan Doyle mentions the ratio of the mixture sometimes I believe.

Ahhh...

There was at least one episode where Sherlock was ruminating on somethingrather and visited a kind of Victorian stereotypical "oriental" establishment of sin and smoked somethingrather, and everyone (including him) appeared to be a bit listless. I assumed it was Opium, but perhaps they just put that in.

I've just spent probably up to an hour searching for it on youtube and might have to admit defeat until morning. I remember the images clearly, and unless I've got a touch of schizophrenia I'm sure it happened, might just take a few days to find. I will PM you when I do find it. :D

i never read a sherlock holmes book... so to me it was quite amusing... though a bit too much hollywood in it.
what i found disturbing is that the plot and story looked too similar to the batman begins script.

I don't know if I want to cry or laugh when I see posts like yours, and believe me, you are not alone.
Can you people please stop whining about "ooh, it's not him because it defiles the picture I made of him through the books and series"
It's an ARTISTIC INTERPRETATION and all the movies you listed are actually pretty damn good.

The fact that they based the movie on said characters doesn't automatically means that they should stay completely within the characters, if you want your imagined version of the characters, go read the bible, i mean book you read when you got those images.

Found it a very good movie, I haven't got a clue if it was accurately in line with the books or that they just named it sherlock holmes to attract viewers.

I wanted to hate it, purely because I'm a curmudgeonly bastard who likes to moan.

I didn't, it was fun. It sends up Holmes' rather dour and aloof presence, which is a good thing - I dislike po-facedness generally unless it's coming from me (wherein it's completely acceptable) :D .

I thought it was such a fun film. I actually can't wait for the sequel. I heard Brad Pitt will be in it. I'm guessing he will be the yet to be seen villain.
