Post Recommend Some Movies

My LoveFilm list is getting short and I need to fill it up with some movies (and games but i'll post in the games forum for that).

Go on gimme a list, I'll say if I've seen em or not... some films aren't available on LoveFilm due to a dispute with Universal, so I can't see Kick Ass and most other new Universal films (yet at least).

Most genres are fine as long as they aren't artsy fartsy cryptic nonsense. I particularly like Sci-fi.

1. Love the hard way. Clint eastwood directed this film. It's good.

2. Kara no kyoukai - anime

3. Gran Torentino

  • Delicatessen - French but still sci-fi
  • Fortress - with Christopher Lambert
  • Highlander II: The quickening - Perplexes the secret absurdist within

What kind of movies are you looking for? How far back are you willing to delve? I'll name just a few more modern foreign films I liked.

- Let the Right One In
- Lust, Caution (This is an NC-17 film I believe.)
- A Very Long Engagement

From my library:

Banlieue 13 (May be able to find as District B13)
Blood Diamond
Equilibrium
Hannibal Rising
Hara Kiri
LA Confidential
Soylent Green
The Talented Mr. Ripley

some sci fi, some action, some drama - these are some of my favorite movies.

Post Re: Recommend Some Movies

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll cross out the ones I've seen and add comments :)

lrkun wrote:1. Love the hard way. Clint eastwood directed this film. It's good. - Added to my list

2. Kara no kyoukai - anime - Doesn't seem to be available :(

3. Gran Torentino - I did start to watch this once but my wife wouldn't shut up talking to her Dad (we were at the in-laws) so I gave up watching it, I'll add it to my list and hopefully get to watch it in full this time

I don't really mind what movies they are really, I'll watch foreign films as long as they are either dubbed well, or don't have a massive amount of dialogue as I'm not the quickest at reading subtitles. Don't mind delving back 10-15 years as I'm sure there are films I haven't seen that I should see at some point in my life.

Sorry, I'm a moron and split the title up, it's just Harakiri as one word.

It's an oldie, but daaaaaaamn good. I'd put it at the top of my list on samurai flicks. If you like it, I've got another metric your mom of suggestions

Post Re: Recommend Some Movies

You have probably seen this but Dr. Strangelove is awesome.
Pulp Fiction
Ocean's 11, 12 and 13 (Twelve not so much but I think you should watch all movies of a series even though there are ones which aren't so good)
The Gamers (is not an official movie, you will find it on youtube, definitely a good movie if you like DnD)
Hitchhiker guide to the galaxy (gets a lot of crap because it was different than the book but I still like it)
Anything Monty Python

I'll second Nausicca, and as long as we're talking about sci-fi and anime, throw in Ergo Proxy.

Barring that, there's a fun Kung Fu film called Chocolate I watched recently...

I'll add them to the list :)
The Gamers (is not an official movie, you will find it on youtube, definitely a good movie if you like DnD) - As you can imagine, not available on LoveFilm :/
Hitchhiker guide to the galaxy - I really enjoyed it, have watched it many times, and I'm a fan of the books and the TV series
Anything Monty Python - There is nothing Monty Python that I have not seen ;)

Chocolate - Really liked this film, the story is a bit naff but the martial arts are great, often quite brutal, the girl in is amazing. It's a Thai film and there seem to be an increasing number of them around, I don't think it's entirely Kung Fu though I dare say there is a mixture of martial arts involved, I think the most prominent one is Muay Thai as they are living next to a Muay Thai acadamy in the film. I suggest watching Ong Bak, Ong Bak 2 and Warrior King if you haven't :)

Thanks peeps :D

Cool, I'll name a few more then in a mixed bag. ;)

- Amores Perros (a Mexican film, and one of my all time faves)
- Dr. Strangelove or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb. (much older than 15 years, but it's hilarious required viewing)
- Blade Runner (Now I'm assuming you are the type of person that's already seen it, but I'll suggest it anyway)
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
- Dark City
- 12 monkeys (Again, I'm assuming...)
- 21 Grams (By the same director of Amores Perros. Also, his directing style didn't copy "Crash". "Crash" copied him. You'll see what I mean.)

Post Re: Recommend Some Movies

Some good films have already been mentioned, my favourites:

Schindler's list
The Shawshank redemption
The Prestige (the Tesla thing is a bit hokey but still a good film)
Silence of the Lambs
House on Haunted Hill (1959, not the newer one)
Serenity
Dune (I've never seen the official release, but the cut I watched was excellent)
Blade Runner (make sure you get the director's cut)
I, Robot
Citizen Kane (I enjoyed it but it's not for everyone)

Ocean's 11 is really good, but 12 is just painful and probably worth skipping (13 gets better).
Wanderer, there is no path, the path is made by walking.

Post Re: Recommend Some Movies

oh, if you haven't seen them:

Snatch
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels

And two just for you Spork. I wouldn't normally recommend these, but I think you might enjoy them:

Hackers - yes, the old 1995 film. It's horrible in accuracy, and very cheesy, which is why I love it
- heres a great example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwg4mbGL4JE

Takedown - Based on Tsutomu Shimomura's account of hunting down Kevin Mitnick. Dramatized, but pleasingly accurate. The director did a good job of making something as boring as reading code look exciting. No big names, but rather well done. Of course, Mitnick's fans hate it because it doesn't glorify him. I'd love to hear what you think of this after watching it.

Predator simply should not be watched without it.

Post Re: Recommend Some Movies

I'm unsure of how PG 13 we should be, but "The Secretary" is my one guilty pleasures.
"Highlander II"?
I've come to recently love "Braveheart", but it's old and I'm weird.
I've also got a thing for the 1969 version of "The Lion in Winter" with Peter O'tool and Katherine Hepburn.
I've seen a variety of anime myself and "Princess Mononoke" is one of my favourites. (But you've seen). As kiddish as it begins, the "Avatar: The Last Airbender "series is excellent if you follow all three seasons. Series are more fun than movies because they keep going!
I've got a lot of other weird recommendations but I won't bother you with them or waste valuable pixel space.
You follow "Doctor Who", right?
