Post Movie - The Invention of Lying

Came out last year, just watched it.

Ricky Gervais is in the lead. He wrote and directed, too.

I found it quite enjoyable, and without giving too much away, I'd say it's a bit relevant to people in here.

What do you think, if you've seen it? :)

That chick was a bitch. I don't see why the main character liked her so much.

In all honesty, it wasn't as good as I had expected.

Post Re: Movie - The Invention of Lying

It was set in the US, but the humour was often quite british in nature. Maybe that's why you didn't find it good? :)

Nah, to be honest it wasn't bad, was quite funny in places. But I didn't go in with high expectations and so wasn't disappointed by it. It was fairly amusing and a fun way to spend an afternoon, but not that much more. Ricky Gervais is funnier in other places. Watch "The Office" (not the crappy US version) and "Extras". It's sort of "awkward moment" humour, which was present in this film, but it didn't work so well as a direct result of the film's premise.

Don't expect much. It's good for a chuckle or two, but it's not fantastic by any stretch.

watching it now, first ten minutes were pretty fun, I like the honesty thing

edit:

It's still funny at places but the rest of the movie is stupid, cliche, boring, too melodramatic.

cheers.

I thought it was great, but I think Ricky Gervais is hilarious no matter what he does. Search youtube for some of his standup routines.

The movie obviously had a low budget, but I knew that going in so I didn't expect fantastic effects or amazing camera work and lighting. No, this movie had to rely on the writing and that's a pretty good bet when Ricky Gervais is involved. I thought it was quite clever actually, especially the last half. Though the concept is completely outrageous he manages to show it in a way that exposes the real target of his satire as being equally outrageous. The scenes were relentlessly logical... as Roger Ebert says in his review of the film and they made me laugh and shake my head at the absuridty of religion. It's a good film that will make most athiests chuckle and most religious people squirm in their seats.

It also had a nice little nod to the Theory of Evolution in the closing few minutes. One last laugh.... at ourselves ..... ie: the people who "get" the film. Typical Gervais.

oh oh - And the scene with his mother. Surprisingly effective. Who knew he could act that well.

Post Re: Movie - The Invention of Lying

Well, as I'm sure everyone can imagine, my reason for posting it here was the criticism of religion.

I didn't have high expectations, and I knew it would be a "gimmick" movie, but I felt it was done well, and I actually liked the characters. I like Gervais, but after a while doing his Office routine, it can get a bit old, but I think he did well in this one with his tired-of-life attitude.

But yeah, the religion thing was great, I think. :)
