Post What Role Do You Play?

For anyone into mmos or rpgs (or the popular combination of the two), what is your primary or favorite class to play? I tend to go for the tank; I can act as a decoy, take a beating, and still deal a good ammount of damage, plus limited ranged combat. I used to play medic/support roles, because they were fun being able to watch the action while remaining relatively safe.

With games such as c&c and starcraft, I employ this principle too. I build a very strong defense line (usually three to four land/air emplacements deep along the whole border and surrounding important buildings) and just amass a blitzkreig force to take out what my pings and specials didnt. If this fails, repeat. It's expensive and a gamble in the beginning but there's usually a wall that if you cross you will pretty much stay in the green so long as you maintain the line.

I tried out a few, but after Enchanter, Bard was my favourite. ;)

Which MMORPG, btw?

Post Re: What Role Do You Play?

I usually stick to RPG's and most often go for a ranger/scout combination with some spell abilities. The one time I actually played DnD I chose a Druid character.

Post Re: What Role Do You Play?

Don't play MMO's but do play RPG's. It really depends on the game. Haven't played too many RPG's but in Oblivion I usually do the sneaky ranged thief but for example in Fable the lost chapters I do everything but mainly stick to meele or magic.

I haven't played any RPGs for at least 10yrs, but when I did I tended towards the warrior end of rangerism.

In MMO's I'm normally a DPS, it's easiest for me to solo with. In paper RPG I like specialised and conflicted roles. One of my favourites was an enormous minotaur... who happened to be a pacifist.

Post Re: What Role Do You Play?

Decoy.

In CS:S I can make it sound like I'm 4-5 people by bringing a bunch of guns along and nade spamming. The enemy will commit to keepimg me back while the rest of the team goes in on the other side. Only works against teams who have enough experience to listen for where the other team is, granted, but there you go.

In RPGs I always try to throw myself into a new element. I usually wind up leading things because I'm proactive rather than reactive, so that helps too.

In MMORPGs I tend towards Healer or Tank. My favoritest class ever is Vanguard's Bard, which is hands down just amazingly well designed. In Rift I play a Cleric and will fill any role with it, though primarily I tank. I like being diverse.

Lord of the Rings Online. Free, fun, and c',mon, LoTR. My friend tried to get me into MUME, and I was liking it for a little while, but text based games just dont do it after you go full-on immersive.

I love exploiting this tactic in any multiplayer that allows it, mostly because (in shooters especially) I make up 80% of team deaths so why not have me making noise? In Halo I jump into a vehicle and be a complete ass while my cohorts take the hidden path (my friend's dad actually shut his console off during a LAN match because of me  ) Suicide bombing was fun too, just camp in a building with a RL and shoot the floor when they walk by. Two for one? Hells yeah.

I like my DPS, even though I hardly use him. It is great for solo, I agree, and sometimes my tank just cant kill enough to pass a quest before dying and I have to go group (which I hate because everyones an asshat on my server).

I think such games are childish, stupid, and a complete waste of time. But for anyone who is into all that, good luck to them. Each to their own.

How was that conducive to the topic?

If you have a problem with gaming, post a new thread about it, don't come derailing one because you've got some strange hard-on for game-bashing. Such behavior is childish, stupid, and a complete waste of time.

Post Re: What Role Do You Play?

So back on topic

How do you typically do strategy games like C&C, Civilization, or Orion?

I employ a similar strat for all where I keep my zone as small as feasibly possible without sacrifice. 5 planets in Orion, not much more - 3 cities in Civ, etc. C&C I'll wall myself off in a corner of the map. I hide while I build up tech and a juggernaut, then unload. Funniest game of C&C I did I could hear my friend Dave in the next room start shouting bullshit when his computer announced "Nuclear Launch Detected" :3 He'd spent all this energy on training units and building up this huge complex base, and I just dropped a nuke on it and swept up. Orion, I'll slip out an conquer the galaxy with 1-3 Doom Stars loaded to the gills with phasers. Civ 5 lets me use my strategy to win through culture victory now, which is cool. The smaller your country the easier it is to win that way. Before I tended to just overwhelm with hugely advanced tech(like rolling a tank up on a phalanx) or go for space race.

Post Re: What Role Do You Play?

In MMO's, I go for healer-classes, if available. If not, then tanking. Of course, my experience in MMOs is as limited as Anarchy Online and WoW, and AO I played for like one week before just getting sick and tired of the awful UI. So all of this explaining comes from WoW.

I played WoW as a healer from the start. When I started in beta(played a rogue) I noticed that there is nothing so important than a good healer. A healer is the ultimate pivot that defines the progress of any group in WoW. And I'm glad that I did choose a healer, because after almost a decade of WoW, I've come to realise that propably more than half of the playerbase can't play their class properly. And this is no overstatement. Most pugs can be outperformed by researching a class for 15-minutes in the proper forums. And if that's the average player, I wasn't going to let chance roll us a healer that's worse. So I became a healer and after almost a decade I've come to really enjoy the support roles.

In RPG's on the other hand, I like casters or melee-dps. If there is no proper magic/big-guns wielder, then I'll go for a rogue-like characters, with high dps and low hitpoints. I like to end the fight before I can make out if the mobs attacking me have two or more legs :P

I've come across this type of snobbery often in games. I don't know why "proper" gamers hate when other people just want to have fun and play styles consistent with their own personalities. I like having idiosyncratic characters and I spend most of my time playing alone, mostly to avoid the players that walk around telling others how bad they are at the game. When I do need to play in a group, most other players start by telling me what I'm doing wrong and end by saying various aspects of my play surprised them by working so well.

Post Re: What Role Do You Play?

Another reason I dont like to do "fellowship" quests, that you can get set up with a guy/gal that thinks they know your char/class better than you (which may be true, but nonetheless), and they spend half their time leading your own quest or skirmish, telling you what to do, and just being total phalluses. Therefore, I tend to skip those quests, grind, and do them solo. I have no problem helping others with said quests, and I just let them lead the way. Some people are confused by this, because for the area I stick around in Im pretty high level and everyone expects me to do the "Take overz!" move.

There are times I dont mind this dickery, however, becuase I am fairly new to the MMO scene (only have 4 chars and only 2 over lv 20), and sometimes its this kind of authoritarian leadership gets my ass in gear and I finally killed that damn barrow lord.

Another char I just recently started and I am LOVING is my hobbit burglar (named Monteblanc for a touch of debonaire). Stealth + decent dps and tricking is fun

To expand the convo, my crafting is usually paired with my class. My champion is a weaponsmith, guardian (tank) armorsmith, lore master (support wizard) is a historian, and the burglar is a jeweler. This way I can avoid exhorbitant prices at the AH ;)
