Post The Secret World, a Lovecraftian MMO

So this game is in a limited open beta. Since I've beta'd other Funcom games I got a key and I've been playing some this weekend. It's really interestingly done.

Instead of classes you simply choose your faction - and factions aren't limited from interacting like in other games. One of the factions is, humorously done, the Illuminati. They play on every conspiracy theorist cliche.

It's also heavily inspired by HP Lovecraft. You may have followed the development of a game called The Whole World Online, which turned into Cabal - a Lovecraftian 20s Horror MMO. The 20s concept was tossed in favor of a modern world, and the name changed from Cabal to the Secret World.

In one of the first zones, Kingsmouth, I noticed an homage they made to the Cthulhu Mythos. Check out the streetnames on the map. The town is infested by zombies, who were infected by a dark fog that rolled in off the ocean.

The game doesn't feature levels in the traditional sense. You get XP, and it goes towards giving your skill points and ability points, which you can then spend to gain new abilities/skills - but there are no levels. There are also no classes. You simply pick up whatever weapons you want to use and and start building abilities with them.

I think I'm going to buy it when it comes out. I'm impressed with it.

And death is forever
And does forever have a life to call its own?
Don't give me an answer cause you only know
As much as I know
Unless you've been there once
And I hardly think so

Sounds like a brilliant game.

Though I'm skeptical - more because of the average intellect of the gamin community isn't exactly ... Bright enough ... to appreciate Lovecraftian horror.
Some would insinuate that being drunk at 9 in the morning to be signs of serious issues.
Me? I'd insinuate it as signs of no plans and a refrigerator full of Whiskey and Guinness.

I think it's going to wind up having a low population of people who do appreciate it. Kind of like Age of Conan. Funcom has demonstrated that they have no problems maintaining and continuing to develop their games more for the people they want to play them than for people who want to play your average slapdash MMO like World of Warcraft or Guild Wars 2. Age of Conan has grown quite nicely and the Conan fans I know LOVE the game.

It's important to note that this is inspired-by and not truly Lovecraft, though who knows what they may pull from the Mythos.

Playing it more I realized you can "max level" by maxing your skills in everything, and once you do you can fill any party role (tank, heal, dps, cc, support) simply by switching weapons and laying out the abilities for them. That's rather cool imo.

Oh, I remember watching around and looking for reviews regarding this -
It looks like a fucking amazing game, yes. But Lovecraftian?

Meh... It's kinda pushing the limits for that definition. However I do enjoy the three factions, global settings, and local instances. But it's just too easy to powergame your character in it.

Give it a try in the last beta this weekend. You'll see.
