Post Steve Pavlina

Has anyone come across this guy?

Someone quoted him on another forum I'm on and his statements immediately set off my bullshit detector.

So basically, if you violate other people’s expectations of how they believe you should behave towards them, that’s considered being disrespectful.

The opposite of disrespect is often what gets transplanted to supplement the rather weak definition of respect.

Consequently, the common meaning of respect is to behave as other people feel you should behave. If you violate others’ expectations in certain ways, then you’re being disrespectful. If you behave the way others feel you should behave, then you’re being respectful.

So respect is actually a form of obedience. Doesn’t that make sense in a way? Aren’t the most obedient people typically considered the most respectful? And isn’t disobedience often labeled as disrespectful?

What and who are you obey to?

I heard you think you are free, but you still obey.

I think the topic is more apropos here than on that particular forum, so I thought I'd bring it here and see what people know of the guy.

From what I've found, he's a self-help author who's success basically comes from telling his audience that because they listen to him, they're smart. That's an interesting approach, and is social engineering 101. Compliments incline people towards you. I've read that he's advocated various whackadoo things like 20 minute sleep cycles, full on liquid diets, and then apparently a sun-energy diet. I mean, except for the liquid diet those are clear BS (and the liquid diet is insanely hard to do without becoming malnourished, but I did it for 12 weeks with close monitoring by several doctors, using specially formulated liquids).

He seems very cultish to me, but without the religious angle. What do you think, what's your experience with him and his followers?
Why does my life have to be so small
And death is forever
And does forever have a life to call its own?
Don't give me an answer cause you only know
As much as I know
Unless you've been there once
And I hardly think so

That was really informative!

Also now I'm wondering. Someone said to me the other day they were going to start "a raw diet" - is this food woo what they were referring to?

It can be. If you want to eat raw food because you like it -- I've been to good raw food restaurants -- it isn't food woo. If you are switching to a raw food diet because you believe it will do something magic or because cooking is being forced upon us by Big Fire, it probably is.
