Show notes can be found here: http://bit.ly/leaguenoteone
A .mp3 of the show can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/ckmvbrd

There were a few hiccups in production (much of them my fault), but I think those can definitely be smoothed out in later shows.

Feel free to criticise. And if you'd like to take part in future episodes, say so. :)

This should be a useful pragmatic tool in promotion of the LoR website, especially in future months if it is to become monthly. Perhaps the forum will experience a rebound in popularity, after the down-slide of the last year or so! The prospects are exciting indeed, so well done. Heh. :)

Besides the obvious interview (with the guy) sound issues, it was quite good. My main gripe i guess is that some parts came across as blatantly scripted, i can understand that there are things that need to be said, but maybe just having bullets points each person can spin in their own way would have been better. I dunno.

Oh yeah, and 'Poetry Corner'? What? Why? I dont even...

Interestingly, nothing was scripted. Yeah, we had a rough Idea of what we'd say but really, these were our show notes. Nothing else afaik.

Gekidami

Firstly, welcome :D

The sound problem with Tylzen was entirely my fault (or rather, my computer's, I think). The lesson we learned here was a good one: Don't let Prole do things on his own.

The point of having Poetry corner this episode was to emphasise that we want our members to contribute not just with criticism (thank you, by the way) or suggestions, but artistically too. We want any member with an idea to feel they can get involved.

I adore Noth's poem personally ;)

Interesting to hear those voices. Im glad it was not (rigorously) scripted, and the dialogue came out pretty smooth and naturally. Overall I say props :D

It was cool to hear people's voices :)

I don't think changing where my /opt or /tmp directories are or whichever manager draws my screen would have made a difference :D

Post Re: First Episode Released

So, here's what I think...

In general, for a first show, it was good. Very good, actually. It had a pretty clear organization, and Inferno's accent is marvelous. Apart from the obvious sound issues, the interviews were well done as well.

Now, one thing I noticed was that there wasn't really that much content to be discussed. I mean, for a Christmas show you did well to talk about what everyone's doing for Christmas, etc, but besides that, the only host who seemed to discuss more serious issues was Hytegia.

Let me rephrase... The show was basically a well done Q&A, Joe asking the hosts about their Christmas and them responding, with the occasional discussion of a topic (like the origin of Christmas by Hytegia).

I'd suggest less Q&A (which will be natural for the next show, since it's not Christmas themed) and more discussion. Also, a tiny bit less sarcasm (:P).

Awww, sarcasm's what the show's all about! ;)

Yeah, content might be good for next time.

Also, thanks for the cookies. :P

I am of the view that Inferno and Noth both have great voices and accents.

Apart from the obvious sound issues, the interviews were well done as well.

We wanted to take it relatively easy, as the first episode (logistics-wise) is always going to be the hardest, and being a festive time of year, it seemed right to make it apparent we were expressing views and not condemnation (a charge often levelled at atheists discussing religious festivals and such), hence the very light-hearted, conversational style.
I feel for three people who didn't know each other, it worked well.

Let me rephrase... The show was basically a well done Q&A, Joe asking the hosts about their Christmas and them responding, with the occasional discussion of a topic (like the origin of Christmas by Hytegia).

Different approaches work for different topics. :)
I believe the format is fluid enough to enable a range of styles and beats. If, let's say, Squawk, he_who_is_nobody, and Inferno hosted, both the tone and the content would be a very different beast, if it were Improbable Joe, Hytegia and me, well, you know that topic would be proto-libertarianism - lol or lulz?...

I'd suggest less Q&A (which will be natural for the next show, since it's not Christmas themed) and more discussion. Also, a tiny bit less sarcasm (:P).

We think the length of the podcasts will be around 45 minutes as a general rule, so there's plenty of time to go further in depth for future releases (topic-dependent) :D

Post Re: First Episode Released

Something to consider, guys. I think. Like I say, just a thought ...

At a later date (apparently), suggestions as to the subject matter of these Shows will be taken from the forum (at least in part). Having glanced at the YouTube comments on the first episode, and considering some of the (somewhat) constructive criticisms, I have to wonder: will we also be listening to the YouTube community, since it is the LoR Show's primary broadcasting venue (and probably where the majority of the views come from too).

I don't think it's that much of a stretch to say that many, many newcomers to this site in the not too distant future, will have been drawn here from interest in the Show, which they may have simply stumbled upon by accident, so I feel this is important. I don't know if this has already been answered, but like I said, it's just a thought. :)

To flesh this out a little more, here are the two current top-rated comments at the time I posted this:
Image

Of course I acknowledge that this project (so to speak) is still early days, and will likely be improved upon. But my question is (ultimately): which communities will be taking suggestions from? Only from the LoR's own website? Or through both the website, and the show's venue e.g. YouTube? :)

I dont see why you wouldnt take into account suggestions from YT, though i'd recommend that the forums get plugged in the actual video, like a clickable link at the very end or even a clickable annotation all the way through, its not like it being there will hide anything. People just dont bother looking at the description most of the time, and they arent going to seek out the forums after hearing someone say the address.

As for the top comment, i agree that the musical parts are a bit on the long side, especially the intro, 15secs would be enough, just under 40 is overkill.

Post Re: First Episode Released

It's funny actually, I thought we had agreed that the music intro shouldn't be more than 15 sec long and yet we got exactly that. :? I think Nasher simply clicked on the wrong audio file.

And yes, we absolutely are taking advice from the YT community. We're already talking about changes being made in our secret/not-so-secret cave.

You can't place annotations for websites outside Youtube. That's Google's dogma right there. You need to put it in the description instead.

Dean, yes we read the comments from YouTube, yes we have taken their points into consideration. We even have a self-criticism thread in the podcave... As for taking suggestions from there etc, sure, but it'll be posted and decided here. :)

Gekidami, we were supposed to have either a short version of the intro or a voice over. In the end, we just didn't have enough time. It will be rectified. :D

As for the video, we've also discussed improvements there, and will implement them as and when they are ready.

One thing I would like to see in future shows is the forum discussed more. The hosts could mention the debates, talk about the popular threads, and discuss the blog posts. I believe that might bring more people to the forum and perhaps start new discussions, debates, and blogs.

I think there's too few things going on on the forums to warrant a news segment.

Dissecting or perhaps highlighting more important points in a popular topic from the forum could be interesting.
