The Meaning of Life - My Answer?

Hi All

During a bout of depression I questioned the whole meaning of life thing and came up with this.

From Shakespeare's As You Like It, > All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players:

That's it, we are just SOULS like actors who live several lives to Experience lives happiness and despair....I do believe that from when we are born to the day we die everything is pre-planned we can't change anything, where I come from we have a saying 'What's For you Won't go past you'

It explains horror like the Holocaust and suffering in the world. it's to know what it's like.

I don't claim that this IS the answer but it makes a lot of sense......

I prefer life has only the meaning you give it.

We could b players in a simulated game but would that change anything ? I suppose you could simply kill yourself to end the game but maybe there are penalties ?

Predestination isn't high on my list of plausible philosophical musings if I'm honest. Also, the holocaust has an explanation; people suck.

In subject like this I really do have to ask what do you mean by "The meaning of life"? The term is so broad that the defenitions for it are all over the place.

As for my personal answer to the whole "meaning of life" (usually in the religious context of "how can you have any meaning in your life without God"): My life has the meaning I, and the people around me, give to it. Nothing more, nothing less. I can find no credible reasons to believe that there is some extrapersonal component for it.

What is the meaning of sleep? I don't know. But if you did, you should know allot more about the nature of universe than what you do now.

Asking 'what is the meaning of life?' makes the assumption that there is a meaning out there to be found. Really we should be asking 'is there a meaning to life?' To that question I'd say the evidence suggests that it is unlikely.

I guess it means your life is yours for taking.

As Stephen Fry says, be excellent to each other.

Indeed I think life is very meaningful from a personal perspective.

I just don't think it has any objective, metaphysical meaning.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my initial thread.

First I haven't see Cloud Atlas, heard it was as we say here 'Mince' so would be interested if this is along the lines of my theory.

As for the meaning of life, I do believe that there is a reason for living..... I'd hate to think it isn't for something more enlightening.

I don't believe the saying 'Life is what you make it' I've known too many good people strive for the most from life only to be dashed by 'fate' and seen others get things just 'handed to them'

Will look through the rest of the forums.

Hope to be an interesting contributor

Why exactly do you believe that there is a reason for living?

Your follow up statement using the words 'I'd hate to think' is quite telling. Disliking, or hating the idea of something doesn't give a good reason to disbelieve it.

I somewhat dislike the idea that I might eventually get sick and frail, but this doesn't give me good grounds to believe that it won't ever happen to me---if you catch my drift.

Other than not liking the idea of there being no meaning to life, do you have any good reasons to believe that there is an ultimate meaning?

Sorry if this comes across as confrontational, but I'd be interested to hear your response.
