Should we respect all religions?

I've seen this kind of rhetoric specially from our friends across the pond, but also locally. That we should respect all religions. I have an answer for my own question though:

Image

Personally I think one should judge any ideology, religions included, on it's merits. Some people seem to have a hard time understanding why religions shouldn't get privileged treatment on the arena of ideas. So no, religions don't deserve any special treatments as does no other ideology and people who think they do are stupid.

P.S. This short rant was brought to you by a nitwit in the net demanding that all religions and sects should be respected. And when I say all, I do mean literally all. Even the monsterious ones. Like Westborough Baptist Church. And wahhabism. And Aztec "we'll rip out your heart and burn it for Huitzilopochtli" religion.

All countries are good. All people are good and are cultures are good too.

Religion is often a part of ones culture. If you don't respect a persons culture then you are a racist so you must respect all religions. Else you are a racist.

Would anyone demand the same of all ideologies? Why would religions get a pass?

I would rather ask "is there a single religion that deserves respect"?

This can't possibly be serious.

Greetings

In general, one should respect people whilst questioning ideological thinking. Religions, as with all ideologies, tend to fall into two categories: "good", and "bad".

Determining into which category an ideology falls may be up for debate but should be fairly clear based on their basic premises.

For example, regarding the Aztec religion, its followers would play a game where they were vying for the right to be sacrificed to their gods - one might think of it as a ancient "suicide-right (as against "rite")-of-passage" to their afterlife with their gods.

On the other hand, the Aztecs sacrificed their enemies to their gods.

The underlying premise was that, without blood, the sun wouldn't rise the next morning. Vast numbers were sacrificed to ensure that the sun would rise. The religion only died because of the Conquistadores' invasion.

The power of normalization is clearly at play here, as well as with other ideologies.

Also, interestingly, a single class on critical thinking can reduce belief in pseudoscience, and superstition.

Similarly, as Jared Diamond notes in The World Until Yesterday, cannibalism doesn't survive contact with cultures where it isn't practiced.

A recent study shows that religions tend to strengthen social bonds.

In the YouTube video, The Four Horsemen, although Dawkins wanted to do away with religions, interestingly, Hitchens didn't - despite his book's subtitle, God Is Not Great

Kindest regards,

James

You can not discriminate against people, based on their religion. Therefore, if respect one, you must respect them all.

Note the difference, some people are religious but they are not religions.

Spoken like a true bigot. Your talking about using discrimination against people based on their culture.

You're another racist. Diversity = Strength.

Respect is earned not given. Anyone asking that religions be respected simply for being a religion is making an appeal to tradition.

Check your privilege. Demanding that a different culture must earn your respect is racist.

I don't see how respecting people whilst questioning ideological thinking is bigotry and/or discrimination.

Your accusation speaks to me of someone who's intransigent in their thinking to the point of being unwilling to have their ideas - beliefs - questioned.

The Aztecs were as unwilling to have their ideas questioned until they saw the sun rise without their having sacrificed anyone.

Kindest regards,

James

This topic can be very interesting. I see no reason why we should let a troll ruin it.

Despite the trolls' attempt at... not sure what exactly, I think it might be a short topic:

The rest of us can differentiate between people and ideologies, recognize that not all ideologies are good (just as not all are bad) and that they should be respected only on their own merits and not as a special privilege they "automatically get" because they fall under a label such as "religion".

By "the rest of us", I did mean the rest of us with the exception of the troll because is there anyone that disagrees?

I'd say respect the person until they demonstrate themselves to be unworthy of respect.

I tend to respect people's religion in that I won't criticise it for the sake of it. If someone is a hardcore Christian but never mentions it to me, or does but only in passing I won't enter into a debate. If the discussion presents itself and its appropriate I will discuss my views.

If I get disrespected when I present my views then I will lose my respect for that person and I will feel justified in telling them why...

No. Nor am I the origin of any of these common sentiments I have expressed in this thread.

Gnug, which religion do you believe is most detrimental and dangerous to us?

Soo... who is the origin of them?

Which religion? I suppose it's a toss up between Islam and Christianity at this point... mostly because they're the biggest and most influential. Sure, them muslamic rayguns seem the obvious choice with all them's there bombs, by terror and violence are not the only dangers that I see.

What about you? I don't suppose you see any danger in the religion you're a part of?
