As Nemesiah says, vegan diets are not always animal-protein free nor are they to be followed regardless of the individual's health.

Vegan diets are not recommended for pregnant women or children, also there are long-term health problems due to a lack of vitamins B-12 and D, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, iron, calcium, etc, in strict veganism.

As always, taking things to extremes is not good for one's health - everything in moderation, as the saying goes.

A couple of problems. The cells needed for this process have to be harvested from a live animal. The most effective and likely form of large scale production of lab-grown meat will involve the slaughter of animals, harvesting of their cells, followed by a grow-up to amplify the amount of meat available. Second tissue culture currently has to be done in a serum derived from animals. So the process isn't free from animal cruelty nor is it obviously more energy efficient.

It is probably less cruel overall than the current meat industry but if you buy the arguments against eating meat from a moral standpoint this technology will not solve those qualms in it's current form. If you are a vegan for energy-efficient reasons I'm not sure what the math on that position looks like but it's unlikely to ever be more efficient than just eating plant material.

If scientists could recreate the flavour and texture of muscle tissue from immortal cell lines and figure out how to synthetically provide the required growth serum, then ethical vegans might be able to consider chowing down on a nice piece of meat. But it depends on your reason for choosing veganism.
